What is PLA?
And why we
print in it.

PLA is the world's most widely used bioplastic. It's spun from fermented plant starch, prints beautifully, contains no petroleum, and can be composted at industrial facilities at end of life. Here's the longer version.

How it works

From cornfield
to kitchen floor.

  1. 🌽

    Fermented starch

    Cornstarch and sugarcane are fermented by lactic-acid bacteria, the same process that makes yogurt.

  2. Polymerised

    The lactic acid is polymerised into PLA pellets and extruded as 1.75mm filament with a matte finish.

  3. 🖨

    Printed in Warsaw

    We melt the filament at 215°C and lay it down in 0.2–0.4mm layers over 14–22 hours per piece.

  4. Back to soil

    At end-of-life, PLA is industrially compostable — it can be processed at certified composting facilities, where available.

Safe for the
animal using it.

Pet safety is the first question we get. PLA is a bioplastic widely used in food packaging and tableware, and the filament we print with is free of the additives that give plastics a bad name.

It contains:

  • No BPA · no bisphenols of any kind
  • No phthalates · no plasticiser softeners
  • No heavy-metal pigments
  • No PVC · no chlorinated polymers

What about the print lines?

The outer rim shows faint horizontal striations — the trace of 0.2–0.4mm layers being laid down. Every piece is hand-finished and inspected before it leaves the studio, and like any pet bowl it should be washed regularly.

Color & canine vision

Dogs see blue
and yellow.
Not much else.

Dogs have dichromatic vision: two color receptors, not three. Their world is built from blues and yellows, with red and green collapsing into a muddy yellow-gray. Five of our PLA Matte colors are picked specifically to read clearly against your floor.

Lemon Yellow — the bright pick

The most visible color in the canine spectrum. Best for outdoor toys and visibility against natural floors.

Marine, Ice & Dark Blue

The blue half of the dichromatic spectrum. Pleasant contrast indoors; very visible against wood, stone, and tile.

Lilac Purple

Sits on the blue edge of the spectrum, so reads as a soft blue to dogs and a tasteful pastel to humans.

to common questions.

What does PLA stand for?+
Polylactic acid — a bioplastic made by fermenting plant starch (corn, sugarcane, and beets) into lactic acid, then polymerising it into a printable filament.
Is PLA Matte safe for pets to eat from?+
PLA is a plant-based polymer widely used for food packaging and tableware. Our filament contains no BPA, no phthalates, and no heavy-metal pigments. As with any bowl, wash it regularly between meals.
Can it go in the dishwasher?+
We recommend hand-washing only, with warm water (max ~40°C) and mild soap. PLA starts to soften and can deform above roughly 50°C, which dishwasher cycles — especially drying — can exceed. Keep it away from boiling water, ovens, radiators, hot cars and direct summer sun.
Is PLA actually biodegradable?+
PLA is industrially compostable: it can be processed at certified industrial composting facilities. It won't break down meaningfully in a backyard compost or in landfill.
What about microplastics?+
Unlike petroleum plastics, PLA can fully biodegrade in industrial composting rather than fragmenting indefinitely. Day-to-day, the smooth hand-finished surface is designed to resist shedding under normal pet use.
Why matte?+
PLA Matte adds a small amount of mineral fibre to standard PLA, giving the print a soft, non-glossy finish that hides print lines and feels more like ceramic. It looks better next to a Tom Dixon vase. Same safety, same material core.
